Hong Kong

2007-04-11 to 2007-04-12

We caught the famous `Star Ferry` to the other side of the water and then caught the very steep tram up to the Peak Tower to see the most spectacular view of Hong Kong, the photo really doesn`t do it justice!

After that, we caught the cable car at Ngong Ping which went along a pilgrimage route that the monks used to walk years ago to see Po Lin. This was very amusign as Steve was obviously scared of being up so high in this cable car, to which the chinese girl that was in the car with us found very amusing as she was giggling at him!

Po Lin was really quite something to see, I think it`s the world`s largest bronze Buddah (though that may be wrong – they seem to say stuff like that at all of these places!)

Once we had a good nights sleep we started to feel a bit more normal again. We decided to walk down to the water and get a feel for Hong Kong. There`s always something crazy going on as  you walk down the roads so it was a good walk.

When we got to the water`s edge and saw the skyline for the first time it really took our breath away, we couldn`t believe that we were finally in Hong Kong and the size of the buildings. The IFC tower was just huge!

In total we walked for about 6 hours just exploring by foot as much as we could. We stopped for a cheap lunch and weren“t really sure what we ordered but it tasted good. We went to a cafe which wasn`t in an area where tourists go and we got lots of stares, one man even came up to the window to stare at ‘S’ and watch him try to use chopsticks for the first time!

Later on in the evening we went down to watch the light show, it was a warm evening and so spectacular to watch, gutted that I didn`t get it on camera very well though.

We arrived at Heathrow airport feeling somewhat emotional, Jodie and Justin kindly drove us to the airport and once we were by ourselves it all began to sink in!

We were both thinking that the flight would be a nightmare as it is the longest flight either of us had been on but we were surprised with a really good journey, it was only half full so there was lots of room to stretch out and plenty of food, films, games, music etc to keep us entertained.

By the time we landed in Hong Kong however, we were feeling a little tired. We caught a bus to Kowloon, which wasn`t too difficult and everything looked so alien to us, it was such a great feeling though. When we got to our hotel we were told we had to wait 5 hours before we could get to our room. Our jet-lag was begining to kick in at this stage too so things were all a bit strange!

We wandered around the Kowloon area for what seemed like a lifetime before finally being able to curl up in our bed. We awoke around 4pm feeling very tired but got our bearings and grabbed some food and started to feel excited again about being in Hong Kong!
